Definition: Bilirubinometers
Explanation: Bilirubinometers
are screening tools for SBR sampling
with the purpose of measuring bilirubin
levels in order to identify infants
who require treatment for hyperbilirubinaemia.
Hyperbilirubinaemia is a common disorder
found in infants usually due to an immaturity
of the liver, and resulting in abnormally
high amounts of bile pigment in the
blood. Visual symptoms include a yellowing
of the skin. Bilirubinometers are great
tools for identifying this disorder
before it transcends to advanced stages.
