Osmometry:
An osmometer is an indispensable
aid to understanding the differing responses of serum and urine to
water load and deprivation, and to making an appropriate diagnosis.
Osmolality measurements are very useful in monitoring the progress
of therapy with diuretics, ADH and insulin. Osmolality measurements
help differentiate between psychogenic polyuria and diabetes insipidus.
In patients with known renal disease, elevated serum osmolality can
indicate the need for dialysis, and monitoring the Osmolality helps
to minimize the duration of treatment.
The accumulation of unmeasured metabolites in blood can be an early
indication of uraemia, or of potentially toxic levels of therapeutic
drugs (ex: salicylates)
Advanced Instruments and Fiske osmometers utilize the Freezing Point
method, by means of a solid-state cooling bath. Results are accurate,
reliable, repeatable and quick.
The following Osmometers are available:
- Clinical Laboratories: Single sample entry : Advanced Model 3300
- Clinical and Industrial: Single sample entry Advanced Model

THE FISKE® 210 Micro-Sample Osmometer
The Fiske® 210 freezing-point osmometer requires only a 20µL
sample size, which provides accurate osmolality results in less than 90 seconds.
For convenience, the fully accessible probe design is easy to clean and service.
The 210 is not only your most reliable option, it's the easiest to use. Just
pipet 20µL of sample into a disposable sample tube, then place the tube
into the test chamber. Lower the probe into the sample and push the "Test" button.
Results are displayed in ninety seconds
Bilirubinometer
